The so-called “iconic turn” has obliged art history to reconsider its methodology for analyzing images. With this in mind, the present work sets forth some original bases for a criticism of images. These bases must be constructed using the image itself as their starting point, that is to say, be created—in contraposition to the Western logocentric tendency—with attention to the image’s own specific properties, its materiality, and the meaning they themselves generate. In order to fix what might be the inherent characteristics of images, these are set, throughout the article, in contraposition to those of verbal language; thus, by means of comparison, to give account of their qualities of meaning. The characteristics set forth in this article include: saying vs. showing; linguistic interpretation vs. mute signification; or the temporality of the image as against the lineal sequence of writing and language.
