La cantidad de disciplinas en las que estuvo involucrado nos ayuda a dibujar un mapa de las formas de apropiación y legitimación tanto artísticas como históricas llevadas a cabo a mitad del siglo XIX en Argentina. Cada técnica artística tenía una modalidad de consumo propia; por ejemplo, los grabados, objetos casi únicos, supusieron un goce personal diferente al de la litografía que, por su posibilidad de reproducción infinita, perdía el endiosamiento aurático de la primera técnica. La influencia de González Garaño, como iniciador de los estudios iconográficos, así como personalidad relevante en el mundo de la gestión cultural e historiografía artística, resultó en que el discurso que él generó en torno a su colección adquiriera el valor de investigación histórica incuestionable. Alejo González Garaño was a Buenos Aires collector, historian, art agent and researcher, whose personal career affords a panorama of Argentine art collecting between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. The variety of disciplines in which he was involved helps us to draw a map of the forms of both artistic and historical appropriation and legitimation taking place since the mid nineteenth century in Argentina. Every artistic technique had a mode of consumption of its own; for instance, engravings, nearly unique objects, represented a different personal taste from that for lithography which, on account of its possibility for infinite reproduction, lacked the auratic vanity of the former technique. The influence of González Garaño, as initiator of iconographic studies, as well as an important personality in the work of cultural management and artistic historiography, led to the discourse he generated around his collection acquiring the value of unquestionable historical research.
