The differences between copy, portrait and simulacrum are fundamental for understanding the function of those representations at the historical moment in which they were conceived. At the same time, the legends depicted on the paintings alluded to can also help us to codify the intention of the artist on executing them. Sculptural simulacra came to be entrusted with the purpose of representing the incarnate God (unlike copies, as was thought until recently).
